Marcus Aurelius ruled Rome from 161 to 180 CE, sharing power with Lucius Verus for the first eight years. Most of his reign was spent on the Danube frontier fighting the Marcomanni and Quadi while plague moved through the empire. The private Greek notebooks he kept during those campaigns survive as the Meditations, a work he never intended for publication.
