Leonardo da Vinci trained as a painter in Florence and worked for patrons in Milan, Rome, and finally France. He completed few paintings but filled thousands of notebook pages with studies of anatomy, water, flight, and machines. Most of those designs were never built in his lifetime, and much of his written work went unpublished for centuries.
