Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland, escaped to Philadelphia in 1849, and then returned to the South roughly thirteen times to lead others out. During the Civil War she served the Union Army as a nurse, scout, and spy, and guided the Combahee River Raid of 1863. Her birth year was never recorded and is usually estimated around 1822.
