About
Temüjin united the rival tribes of the Mongolian steppe and was proclaimed Genghis Khan in 1206, then led campaigns against the Western Xia, the Jin dynasty and the Khwarazmian empire that produced the largest contiguous land empire in history. His rule imposed a common law, protected long-distance trade and exempted religious clergy from taxes; his armies also destroyed cities and killed civilians on an enormous scale.
